Over the last few months, I’ve been working on putting together a brief timeline of squash in Wales - charting everything from the first courts built in Cardiff to international medals and world-stage success. Born in 1985, my earliest squash memories start in the mid-90s. I remember watching GG play for Fatra Cardiff and seeing my first all-glass court when the British Open came to Wales, but I don’t know the full story. That’s where you come in.

Eventually, I’d love to build a complete timeline: a record of when clubs and courts across Wales opened or expanded, detailed profiles of Welsh players' success on tour, and even research into Masters squash and the Home Internationals. For now, this brief history lives as a single web page — but the dream is to one day turn it into an exhibition-style showcase when we next host a major PSA event in Wales.
If you know any extra details that could help enrich what I’ve already gathered, or if you have old photos, memorabilia, stories, or even corrections; please get in touch. I want this project to be as accurate, thorough, and community-driven as possible.
Squash is a game Wales is passionate about. At the professional level, it looks better than ever; and while the sport is growing in some parts of the world. Unfortunately, we’re seeing a decline here in Wales. The number of courts, clubs, teams, and players is down compared to just eight years ago. There are bright spots and some real momentum in certain areas, but overall the game is in retreat.
No one person can reverse that on their own. It will take a combined effort from clubs, coaches, volunteers, and players in every corner of the country to grow the game again; starting at each local court. Our current pro players are doing a brilliant job flying the flag for Wales on tour. I just hope enough juniors are watching, playing, and being inspired to follow in their footsteps.
If you can help expand the history, share memories, or spot something I’ve missed, please get in touch:
